Environmental Management Systems (EMSs)
An EMS represents a continual cycle of planning, implementing, reviewing and improving the
processes and actions that an organization undertakes to address its immediate and long-
term environmental impacts of its products, services, and activities.
Key benefits of an EMS may include: improved environmental performance, reduced liability,
satisfying customer requirements, greater competitive advantage, improved public image,
improved compliance, reduced costs, fewer accidents, greater employee involvement, and
enhanced customer trust.
Relevant EMS project experience of our professionals includes:
ISO 14001 EMS Development (lamp manufacturer), Manchester, New Hampshire. Served as
ISO 14001 management specialists providing assistance for ISO 14001 registration at a high
intensity discharge lamp manufacturing facility that employs approximately 800 to 900
individuals. Developed all of the facility’s EMS procedures and assessed the facility’s
environmental impacts by conducting a comprehensive aspect/impact analysis and developing
a database to prioritize and identify “significant” impacts. During the subsequent successful
registration audit, the auditors identified this element of the EMS as “best of breed”.
On-Site EMS Implementation Assistance (lamp manufacturer), Manchester, New Hampshire.
Implemented and managed all elements of client’s ISO 14001 EMS while working at the facility
one to two days per week. Specific work tasks included: participating on the facility’s EMS
cross-functional team, thereby gaining first-hand EMS implementation experience; initiating
and managing corrective and preventive actions for regulatory and EMS nonconformances;
leading and participating on the facility’s internal auditing team; updating and managing the
facility’s two EMS-related Microsoft Access® databases; maintaining all necessary EMS-related
records; establishing and maintaining the facility’s environmental aspects and impacts,
objectives and targets, legal and other requirements, document control system, and
internal/external communications; and identifying and managing documents related to the
facility’s training needs, operational controls and monitoring and measuring strategies.
ISO 14001 EMS Implementation Assistance (electrical connector manufacturer), North
American Corporate Office. Served as an ISO 14001 management specialist providing
assistance to a client’s North American operations in pursuit of ISO 14001 registration.
Specific assignments and responsibilities included developing corporate EMS procedures and
recommending specific tasks as part of the implementation process for three pilot facilities.
Developed Level 1 and Level 2 EMS procedures and database management systems for use
by the pilot facilities in their implementation efforts. Two of the three pilot facilities successfully
achieved registration prior to a corporate slowdown that concluded this work.
ISO 14001 EMS Assistance (textiles manufacturing facility), Manchester and Somersworth, New
Hampshire. Provided assistance for ISO 14001 registration by assessing the facility’s
environmental impacts through a comprehensive aspect/impact analysis. Developed a
database scoring system algorithm that utilized nine criteria to prioritize and identify “significant”
impacts. All aspects of the facility operations were identified and tabulated to provide a basis
for improving environmental performance of the organization. During the subsequent
successful registration audit, the auditors identified this element of the EMS as exemplary.
ISO 14001 Internal Auditing Assistance (textiles manufacturing facility), Manchester and
Somersworth, New Hampshire. In 2007, provided internal EMS auditing assistance by
reviewing and modifying the facility’s internal audit procedure to provide for external facility (i.e.,
third-party) personnel to complete the internal audit. Performed a pre-audit document review of
the following: existing EMS procedures and documents; objectives, targets and programs;
significant aspects and impacts; recent internal/external audit findings; and open
corrective/preventive actions. Completed internal audit by observing practices and sampling
records at all levels of the organization. Provided a copy of all EMS findings, including
completed Corrective and Preventive Action Request forms, a summary listing of
nonconformances and opportunities for improvement, and a copy of audit team checklist with
field notations and records collected during the audit.
